Bare Act
The Indian Forest (Bombay Amendment) Act, 1948
This Act amends the Indian Forest Act, 1927, to strengthen the regulation and protection of forest lands within the state. It expands the definition of forest produce to include specific leaves and empowers the government to exert greater control over private forests and lands near canals or roads. The legislation introduces stricter enforcement measures, including provisions for the summary eviction of encroachers, the classification of certain forest offences as non-bailable, and the empowerment of various officers—including Revenue and Police officials—to act as forest authorities. It essentially balances state oversight with the management of forest resources, impacting landowners, forest dwellers, and local communities.
