The Coroners (Maharashtra Repeal) Act, 1999
The Coroners (Maharashtra Repeal) Act, 1999 formally abolishes the archaic colonial-era system of Coroners in Mumbai, Maharashtra. By repealing the Coroners Act of 1871, this law closes the offices of the Coroner and Additional Coroners in Mumbai. Existing staff and officials from these offices are transferred or absorbed into regular government and judicial posts. Furthermore, any pending inquiries into suspicious or unnatural deaths are transferred to standard local Magistrates to be processed under the Code of Criminal Procedure. This legislation streamlines death investigations, integrating Mumbai's inquest process into the unified national criminal justice system.
