Bare Act
The Maharashtra Municipal Councils and Municipal Corporations (Postponement of Election due to Ensuing General Elections to the State Legislative Assembly) Act, 1977
This 1977 Act was a temporary legislative measure enacted by the Maharashtra State Government to pause local municipal elections. Because the state was preparing for General Elections to the State Legislative Assembly, the government needed to ensure administrative continuity. Consequently, this law postponed all municipal council and corporation elections and automatically extended the terms of existing councillors, presidents, and administrators until May 31, 1978. It ensured that local governance did not collapse during the state-wide political transition. For citizens, this meant that their local representatives remained in office longer than originally scheduled, maintaining stability in municipal services during the state election period.
