The Kerala Stay of Recovery of Arrears of Jenmikaram Act, 1975
The Stay of Recovery of Arrears of Jenmikaram Act, 1975 was a temporary state law in Kerala designed to provide immediate relief to agricultural tenants under the Kanam tenancy system. It temporarily halted all pending and new legal proceedings, court suits, execution of decrees, appeals, and revisions aimed at recovering past unpaid Jenmikaram, which were traditional dues owed by tenants to landholders. By freezing these debt recovery efforts through the end of 1975, the legislation protected tenants from legal harassment and forced payment of accumulated arrears, while ensuring that time limits for landlords to eventually file claims were extended accordingly.
