The Sivagiri Mutt (Emergency Provisions) Act, 1997
The Sivagiri Mutt (Emergency Provisions) Act, 1997
This law provides for the temporary takeover of the management and properties of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sanghom Trust, including the sacred Sivagiri Mutt and its various educational and healthcare institutions, by the state government. It applies to trust administrators, rival factions, beneficiaries, and anyone holding trust assets or records. The legislation matters because severe internal disputes, financial mismanagement complaints, and factional violence threatened public peace and disrupted the spiritual and social institutions founded by Sree Narayana Guru. By appointing an administrator, an advisory council, and a special tribunal, the state aimed to protect trust assets, restore harmony, and conduct fair elections for a new governing board.
