Bare Act
The Local Authorities (Prohibition of Defection ) Act
This law prevents elected members of local government bodies in Kerala, such as panchayats and municipal councils, from switching political parties or disobeying official party directions during key votes. It applies to party members and independent representatives participating in local elections and governance. Under the Act, members who voluntarily give up party membership, vote against party directives in leadership elections or no-confidence motions, or join political groups after winning as independents lose their seats. Disqualified individuals are banned from contesting local elections for six years. The law matters because it ensures political stability, protects voter mandates, and prevents opportunistic party-hopping.
