THE KERALA PRIVATE FORESTS (AS::iUMI'TION OF MANAGEMENT) ACT, 1957
The Kerala Private Forests (Assumption of Management) Act, 1957
The Kerala Private Forests (Assumption of Management) Act, 1957 empowers the Kerala state government to temporarily assume management of large private forests exceeding 100 acres in the Malabar district. Applying to forest owners, lessees, and mortgagees, the law enables the state to take control for up to five years in the public interest or to prevent improper management. While under government administration, officials can cultivate land, harvest trees, and sell timber, while owners are restricted from transferring or encumbering the property. The government must keep audited accounts, return any net surplus revenue to the owner, and eventually hand back control.
