The Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015
The Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015 makes the learning of the Kannada language mandatory across all schools in the State of Karnataka. It applies to all educational institutions from nursery through standard X, including state-run, private, and minority schools regardless of whether they receive government aid. Under this law, schools must teach Kannada as either a first or second language using state-prescribed textbooks, implementing it in a phased manner starting from standard I up to standard X. This legislation ensures that all children growing up in Karnataka acquire proficiency in the regional language while preserving their right to study their mother tongue as a third language.
