The Karnataka Service Examinations Act, 1976
The Karnataka Service Examinations Act, 1976
The Karnataka Service Examinations Act, 1976, regulates promotion eligibility for state government employees, including individuals serving Karnataka following the 1956 states reorganization. The law matters because it resolved long-standing career disputes by retrospectively declaring that no service examinations were required for civil service promotions between November 1956 and January 1974. Government servants who were denied promotions during this period solely for not passing examinations obtained prospective promotions, retroactive seniority, adjusted pay scales, and revised pension benefits. From January 10, 1974, onwards, the Act reinstated mandatory examinations to ensure a structured and fair advancement system.
