This Act prohibits converting a person from one religion to another by misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement, fraud or marriage. A marriage done solely for the purpose of such a conversion can be declared void. A person who wants to convert must give a declaration before and after conversion to the District Magistrate. Unlawful conversion is punishable, with higher penalties where the person converted is a minor, a woman or belongs to a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe, and the burden of proving a conversion was lawful is on the person who caused it.
