The Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964
The Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964
This law applies to all people in the state of Karnataka. It regulates animal welfare and the meat industry by completely banning the slaughter of cows and female buffalo calves. Other cattle, including bulls and male buffaloes, can only be slaughtered if they are over twelve years old or permanently unfit for work, which requires a government certificate. The Act matters because it makes unauthorized slaughter, sale, or transportation of these animals a crime punishable by fines and imprisonment. It also establishes dedicated state shelters to care for abandoned, old, or diseased cattle, protecting livestock and agricultural livelihoods across the state.
