The Scheduled Tribes and others Traditional Forest Dwellers Recognition of Forest Right Act 2006
The Scheduled Tribes and others Traditional Forest Dwellers Recognition of Forest Right Act 2006
This Act regulates the legal recognition, vesting, and protection of land tenure and resource access rights within India’s diverse forest regions. It applies to forest-dwelling Scheduled Tribes as well as other traditional forest dwellers who have lived on and directly depended on these lands for generations prior to December 2005. This legislation matters because it corrects major historical injustices by securing heritable, non-transferable land ownership, safeguarding livelihoods dependent on minor forest produce, and protecting communities from arbitrary eviction. Ultimately, it empowers local village assemblies, known as Gram Sabhas, to govern all forest resources and lead critical wildlife conservation efforts locally.
