The Jammu and Kashmir Prevention of Defacement of Property Act makes it illegal for anyone to damage, disfigure, or write on public or private property like buildings, statues, or vehicles with ink, paint, or other materials, unless identifying the owner. This law ensures public spaces remain clean and aesthetically pleasing. It applies to the whole state and applies its rules even over other existing laws. Penalizing those who spoil property with writing or marks, the act empowers the government to erase such graffiti immediately and imposes a fine or jail term of up to three months for the offender.
