The Jammu and Kashmir Anatomy Act, 1959
Health195911 sections
This law governs what happens to unclaimed bodies in the state to support medical science. It requires hospitals, prisons, and public authorities to report unclaimed deaths to government-approved officers. These officers then hand the bodies over to approved medical institutions for anatomical examination, dissection, and organ removal for transplantation. If a body is deemed unfit for medical use, the government will arrange for its cremation or burial. The Act also sets penalties, including fines, for anyone who improperly disposes of a body or interferes with the legal process of handling these remains.
