The Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, 2006

General200626 sections

The Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, 2006 mandates the compulsory registration of all marriages solemnized within the state of Gujarat, regardless of religion or custom. It applies to all couples marrying or remarrying in the state, requiring them to submit a signed marriage memorandum within thirty days of the wedding. This law matters because while failing to register does not invalidate the marriage, it is legally required. Crucially, government and private employers cannot update employee records, marital status, or beneficiary nominations without a registered certificate, and failing to register or providing false information results in financial fines.
