Bare Act
The Gujarat Local Authorities (Emergency Provisions) Act, 1965
This Act governs how the Gujarat state government manages local municipal bodies and village councils during emergencies. It applies to municipalities, corporations, and neighborhood panchayats throughout the state, including Ahmedabad. The law authorizes the state government to temporarily extend the term of elected councillors or members when elections cannot be held due to emergencies lasting no more than one year. Additionally, it allows the government to dissolve or take control of local authorities that fail to perform their duties or act against public interest. When this happens, appointed officials temporarily exercise the local body's powers. The Act also configures how the government can delegate these responsibilities and make implementation rules, providing necessary flexibility during legal or political crises affecting local governance structures.
