Bare Act
The Goa, Daman and Diu (Abolition of Proprietorship of Lands in Diu) Act, 1971
This law abolishes the colonial-era land proprietorship system in the Diu district, transferring land rights granted under former Portuguese rule to the central government. It protects local tenant farmers, agricultural laborers, and village artisans by granting them direct occupancy rights over the land they cultivate or live on, subject to paying land revenue and maintaining personal cultivation. Former proprietors retain only their personal residences and self-cultivated lands, receiving financial compensation for lost property rights. By eliminating feudal landholdings and restoring evicted tenants, the legislation aims to empower rural tillers, ensure equitable land distribution, and modernize agricultural land governance in Diu.
