This Act regulates the management and preservation of public records in Bihar. Each office nominates a Records Officer responsible for its records, and public records cannot be taken out of the State, destroyed or transferred except as the Act allows. Damaging or unlawfully disposing of records is punishable. The Act also lets research scholars consult records and sets up an Archival Advisory Board.
