Chapter I PRELIMINARY

(1) This Act may be called the Kannada University Act, 1991. (2) It shall come into force on such date as the State Government may, by notification, appoint.

In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires,- (a) "appointed date" means the date of commencement of this Act; (b) "Government" means the State Government; (c) "hostel" means a unit of residence for the students of the University maintained or recognised by the University in accordance with the provisions of this Act and includes a hostel recognised as such by the University under this Act; (d) "prescribed" means prescribed by this Act and the statutes; (e) "statutes" means the statutes of the University made under this Act; (f) "teachers" means professors, emeritus professors, readers, lecturers and other like persons as may be declared by the statutes to be teachers; (g) "University" means the Kannada University established under section 3; (h) "University Grants Commission" means the Commission established under section 4 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (Central Act 3 of 1956); (i) "University library" means a library maintained by the University, whether instituted by it or not.
